Mi Nena
My first memory of you, is begging Mama to let me hold you to put you to sleep “en la hamaca” at our Grandparent’s house. Mama hesitated because she knew I would get sick (I had a delicate stomach). Finally, she relented. I got on the “hamaca” and she placed you on my chest (instant bonding!). It took you so long to fall asleep that I was cured! (It was that, or Mama would take you away.)
From the time you started to walk, you would explore around the house and once you could get out, you loved the “dapey”. You stepped in puddles and chased the baby chicks. Unfortunately, if they were not fast enough you would step on them and “adios” baby chicks. It did not take long for you to be banned from the “dapey”.
You then began to explore in the front yard and soon discovered a newly dug trench. You followed it to the end! It took awhile to find you, as you were no bigger than a mother hen!
You were always encouraged to perform, doing your own dances, etc. You referred to your hair as “Pasha Dura y Colora”, a quote that always got laughs.
When Josh was born, you couldn’t say “el nene” and would call him “Nuno”, a name that to Josh’s consternation, stuck. Imagine referring to Joshua Eliel Santana Melecio, Esq. as “Nuno”! (We still do.)
You were always inventive, daring and defender of others less fortunate. Traits that stayed with you throughout your life.
You’re a giving, devoted Mother. You would carry Michael on your hip to Church, as well as, political functions, and family gatherings. The same was true for Anna Cecilia. Your children outgrew you in size, but it did not matter, you were always the Mother. You found your soulmate and loved and devoted your life to him: JOSE.
I marveled to realize how many years you, Ceci and I travelled to Virginia to visit with Barry’s family. You always drove and were a great tour guide. We took side trips, including circling Washington, DC several times when we couldn’t figure out how to get out of the wrong lane! Of course, we talk about every time we went by and laugh to our heart’s content.
Our trips to Virginia always included a couple of days in Atlantic City, where you and I played the machines and Ceci looked bored to death! It was fun to walk on the Boardwalk.
We never made the 22nd trip…
Dally, I miss you and always will. I love you and always will… Mi Nena…
Always, Tellin.

My condolences to Jose and family. I had the pleasure of working with Hilda in Philly. She was a really nice person. Her smile and laughter was contagious. She always spoke with a softness in her voice. I remember Hilda as a woman who loved children and worked her best to make good decisions on their behalf. As I think back, I am inspired by Hilda's devotion to her family, and love for people. May the good Lord have her in his glory.
Peace be with you all.

Titi Dally,
I was, and still am, angry and hurt about what happened. But, more than anything, I am so sad that I won't be able to see you again in this lifetime. I can still vividly remember, when I was a child, staying in Mama and Papito's house in the Bronx. I remember you teaching me and David how to slide down the banister of the staircase, and how to run/skip step down the stairs really fast - and Mom not being too happy about it! I remember the music from Tio Nuno's saxophone echoing down from his upstairs bedroom. I can close my eyes and remember the smells of Mama's kitchen - and her cooking.
But most of all, I remember the love in that house and how safe I felt there. You were a big part of that... I'm going to miss your stories of our family; I'm going to miss your smile, your laugh, and your hugs.
Me haces falta, Titi Dally, me haces falta...
To echo Tio Nuno' s sentiment: One day, I hope to see you, Mama and Papito again. Tellin te quiere mucho.
Descansa en Paz, Titi Dally. Te amo.

Dally,
Although you were older than me, I always thought of you as my "kid" sister. You probably have no idea how influential you were in my life. One of these days we'll have a long conversation about that. You were an inspiring presence and I will always miss you. I am sorry your life's journey has come to an end but I take solace in knowing you are at the table with Mama, Papito, and all the other saints. I will love you always.
