Obituary of Maureen C. Stellino

Maureen Carney Stellino, who worked in law, public, school and corporate libraries during her long career as a librarian, passed away in a nursing home in Collingswood, N.J., on Dec. 14, 2019. She was 77.

Born on Sept. 18, 1942, in Troy, N.Y., to Richard and Jane (Malaney) Carney, she grew up in Ticonderoga where her mother was a school librarian. She graduated from Ticonderoga High School before earning her bachelor’s degree at the College of New Rochelle. She then obtained her master’s in library science at Case Western Reserve before beginning her career at a corporate library in Cleveland. She also spent a year in night law school and was ranked third in her class. Before long, she moved to New York to work as assistant law librarian at a law firm before becoming a head librarian at another firm.

After moving to Pittsburgh in 1974, she was a stay-at-home mom raising her two daughters before working at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library. She then moved to Timonium, Md., in 1983 and worked at The Catholic High School in Baltimore before taking a position as the head librarian at Verner, Liipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand in Washington, D.C. While at the law firm, she worked with such political figures as Bob Dole, George Mitchell and Ann Richards. Maureen then moved to Jacksonville in 2002 where she worked at a public library in South Mandarin before retiring.

Maureen, who also enjoyed playing bridge and baking, was involved in various community activities over the years, including serving as the president of the Junior Women’s Club in Mt. Lebanon and the co-president of the American Association of University Women in Baltimore. She also was involved in the Children’s Theater organization in Mt. Lebanon.

Not surprising for a librarian, she was a voracious book reader. She also loved to travel and didn’t need to take a tour because she used her library skills to map out the plans for trips to such destinations as London, Paris, Rome, Ireland and Hawaii. Maureen was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and attended their first three Super Bowl victories in the 1970s and then their 2006 win in Super Bowl XL.

She is survived by her husband, Vito of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Tracy (Brad) Polovick of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Lisa (Ray) Lamboy of Camden, N.J.; two sisters, Peg (Tom) Glisson of Pittsford, N.Y., and Patricia Rhee of A.Z.; four grandchildren, Tyler and Kaleigh Polovick, and Benjamin and Lily Lamboy; and several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Visitation on Saturday, December 28, 2019, from 10:30 AM at the Church of St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral, 2907 Federal Street in Camden, where a Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in her honor be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or a public library of your choice.
