Doris Nelson

Obituary of Doris A. Nelson

Doris A. Nelson passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on April 12, 2018 after battling a lengthy illness.

Doris was born on February 29th, 1932, in Camden NJ to James Ford and Thalenia Haywood. She was educated in the Camden School system graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School with the class of 1949.

Doris married her childhood sweetheart Delbert on February 18th, 1950, and recently celebrated their 68th anniversary.  From this union came 4 daughters, Delisse Renee, Spring Alana, Dorri Lynn and Shelli Alissa.

Doris began her career as telephone operator with The Bell Telephone Company and later worked for a brief time at Bamberg’s Department Store.  In 1964, she was hired by the Camden City Police Department and retired as a Supervising Clerk after more than 30 years of dedicated service.

Doris played an active role with many community and civic organizations including member of the Eastern Star Lily of the Valley Chapter #2 OES, VFW Ladies Auxiliary Clarence Hill Post 1297, Girl Scout Troop Leader and PTA President.

Her passion was reading and could always be found on her porch with a book or a crossword puzzle.  At any social event or family gathering watching Doris and Delbert dance was always the highlight of the evening.

She took extraordinary pride in raising her children and spent many years creating a beautiful home and caring for them in the community that she loved, never hesitating to open her door to take in others. Many have past though the door of what she simply called “1142” and for the entire family it has become a place everyone calls home.  As a mother of daughters, she stressed education, career, class and most importantly to her, independence.

Doris will now spend eternity with her mother Thalenia, daughter Shelli and grandson Joel. Until we meet again her love and legacy will live on in the heart and minds of our family. She leaves to forever honor and cherish her memory, a loving husband Delbert Nelson; devoted daughters, Delisse Gilmore (Sam), Spring Nesbitt (Hallie) Dorri Brown (Richard) and Son-in-law Gregg Hutton; 1 brother Dwain Ford; Brother-in-law Alan Nelson (Naomi); Sister-in-law Ethel White; 5 grandchildren, Kindra, Jarrad, Christian, Taylor and Alana; 4 Great-Grandchildren, Jarred Jr, Jamie, Dreu and Azaz; Nieces, Karen Nelson, Suzanne Nelson-Hall(Charles), Rafia Nelson-Lowe(Parker), Natasha Baily, Summer Spring, Jazmin Lewis; and a host of loving family and friends.
