Obituary of Tomas Rivera Sr.

Tomas Rivera Sr., age 81 years, originally of Cidra Puerto Rico, formerly of Camden and most recently of Blackwood, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2017. Beloved husband of Matilde (nee Quiles); Devoted father of Tomas Jr. Rivera (Leonor Nolan-Rivera), Brunilda Rivera, Mildred Rivera Yambo and Father David Rivera; Cherished grandfather of Tomas Rivera III, Cruz Yambo Jr, Matthew Rivera, Nicholas Yambo, Erik Rivera and Ciara Yambo. Dear brother of Alfonso, Esperanza and Hector. Also survived by loving nieces & nephews.

Tomas was a proud Veteran who served his country during the Korean War. He was a well-known barber for over 25 years in North Camden. In 1970, he opened and operated a grocery store on 19th street and River Road in Cramer Hill which he owned until 1989. He was a member of Puerto Rican Unity for Progress (PRUP).

Tomas was described as a jack of all trades; he was also a self taught musician, he learned to play the accordion, guitar, harmonica and organ.

Most importantly however and above all else, Tomas was a devout Catholic. The Catholic faith was central to his life. As a member of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal he established many prayer meetings throughout the south Jersey region in places such as Camden, Mount Holly, Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Lindenwold and Blackwood as well as in Philadelphia. He trained many leaders for the Charismatic Renewal.

Relatives & friends are invited to the Visitation & Funeral on Tuesday from 6 to 9 PM, a rosary service will begin promptly at 6 PM and Wednesday from 8:15 to 9:15 AM at the Falco Caruso & Leonard Funeral Home, 6600 Browning RD in Pennsauken. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM at the Church of St. Peter, 43 W. Maple Avenue in Merchantville. Interment Calvary Cemetery in Cherry Hill.

Tomas era un veterano que sirvió a su país con mucho orgullo durante la guerra coreana. Él era un barbero bien conocido por más de 25 años en el norte de Camden. En 1970 abrió y operó una bodega en la calle 19 y River Road en Cramer Hill, hasta 1989. Fue miembro de la Unidad Puertorriqueña para el Progreso (PRUP).

Fue un músico autodidacta, aprendió a tocar el acordeón, la guitarra, la armónica y el órgano.
Lo más importante sin embargo y sobre todo Tomás era un
Católico muy devoto. La fe católica era central en su vida.

Como miembro de la
Renovación Carismática Católica empezó muchos círculos de oración en toda la región sur de Jersey en lugares como Camden, Mount Holly, Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Lindenwold y Blackwood, así como en Filadelfia. Preparo a muchos líderes para la Renovación Carismática.
