Tracy and family,
I attended the viewing for Joe last evening and paid my respects to you but so briefly. There was more I wanted to say but didn't want to hold up the line.
I worked with Joe as an emt for the police department. We went on many calls together and it was always comforting to know Joe was there as a backup.
I enjoyed his quirky, at times, sense of humor. Much like mine I guess.
I remember when you & Joe built the house in East Pennsauken and visited him many times. After Joe retired, I didn't see him that much but always enjoyed talking with him when I did.
I was not aware of his strong connection to ice hockey and all the rinks he worked at over the years.
I'm very sorry for you and the family at his passing.
I'll always remember him as a "good guy" and felt fortunate to work with him over the years.
Wishing you all the best.

To the family of Joe Crowthers,
I will admit that I did not know Joe personally but I met Joe a number of times and he was a wonderful man. My friend from high school, John Thompson, was recruited to play at Penn from 1975 to 1979. I went down to Philly to watch John play all the time and I always got a kick out of the Flyers - Bruins rivalry at the time (I am from Rhode Island by the way...). Fast forward to 1997 - my family re-located to Philadelphia and I spent 10 great years living in Wallingford & Swarthmore. I ended up coaching hockey at the middle school and high school level. I spent ALOT of time at the Class of 23 rink and I crossed paths with Joe quite a bit. Although it was sad that Penn ended their hockey program, I always felt that the rink was well run and well maintained. Joe was behind this. Please be aware that thoughts and prayers come from many people. Joe was a great guy.

I’m so sorry for your loss. Joe was my friend for 20 years and such a big part of our online capping community from the very beginning. His great sense of humor and amazing generosity will not be forgotten by any of us. I hope his family knows how many friends he had all across the country and how much we enjoyed the time we had with him over the years. Only some of us got to meet him in person, but he touched our lives and we loved him. For what it’s worth I’ve put together a page for our community to post their memories of Joe and what he meant to us:

Joe was a great guy and friend of the Penn hockey program. Despite a small budget, he resourcefully managed to keep the Penn Rink looking it's best and took great pride in little projects to make the rink look better, such as placing an old pair of his skates in aa trophy case, showcasing periodic discoveries of old Penn Hockey memorabilia tucked away in the rink's nooks and crannies, and beautifully decorating the rink with red, white, and blue bunting. He was a friend to hundreds of students and alumni, and a great storyteller, something that came naturally to him as he was the connective tissue for the rink back to 1970s and the original rink manager, "Bud" Meier. Joe had worked for Bud at the Cherry Hill Arena. Others knew him better than I did, but I looked forward to chatting with each year during Homecoming and at the alumni hockey game. He will be greatly missed.

It was several years now since I met Joe. I had come back, after being absent for over 30 years...The "boys" were congregating once more to celebrate Penn Hockey in its epoch and to lend voice to the current programs. There was Joe, meeting us as we entered the arena, smiling and firmly shaking our hands, welcoming sincerely. Over the course of the three days, I spent time with Joe and was so impressed with his demeanor, candor, and can do ways. He and I talked Flyers and the Spectrum, the run to Nationals that fell short by the Div.1 teams, and of course the current state of Penn Ice Hockey. He was such a strong support to the arena and all things Penn Hockey. Where I had come back expecting a funeral dirge being played, I left with the echoes of "...Hurrah, Hurrah, Pennsylvania...Hurrah for the Red and the Blue...! What a skilled processional and wonderful human being.
Joe presented me with a Penn Arena coat two years ago when I last visited. I was humbled with the gift and use it today while I ride up on the tractor shoveling snow back here in Minnesota. And yes, I think of Joe every time I put it on. And Penn..
To all the family, what a blessing you had to have Joe PART of you life. My interaction was but a brief six days over the course of four years. But they were special. May the Lord give you grace and peace to know that Joe is home...and that you were loved
cheers in love

On warm winter days in my cabin I will look out the bay window you helped me install and wish you were there to enjoy a cold Mountain Dew and lake view. Thank you for being such a generous friend with your time and expertise on our many projects at the cabin.

My condolences to the Crowthers family on your loss. As a Penn Hockey alum, I had the opportunity to meet Joe and work with him on several initiatives. He was always such a pleasure to be with and was such a huge supporter of the men and women who played hockey for Penn. He will be missed by many. May he RIP.

Crowthers Family,
Sending my deepest condolences to you and your loved ones.
As part of the Penn women's ice hockey team, I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Joe at his home away from home - the Penn ice rink. He was always so kind and generous with his time - he graciously renovated the women's team's locker room, a piece of his legacy that many players to come will enjoy throughout the years. I will always remember visiting him in his office above the ice to talk about scheduling ice time and how he would never fail to offer a soft pretzel, a soda, or a snack, a small testament to his caring nature.
His friendly face and warm smile will truly be missed.

Dear Crowthers family:
I wish to convey my sincerest condolences to your entire family. Losing a loved one in death is one is one of the hardest things that anyone will ever have to deal with. There is a great hope held out to us for the future because God promises to bring those we lost back to life by means of a resurrection to a paradise earth, where sickness and death will be no more. I hope this brief message will bring you a measure of comfort in this difficult time.

Our deepest condolences to the Crowthers family. I had the privilege of knowing Joe and playing hockey with him a number of years back. I had more laughs on that team than just about any other and Joe was a big part of it.
I hope St. Peter has a post-1960s model CCM helmet waiting for you.
